Purpose:
The John Knox Fellows are college or divinity school students, who spend three months to a year working a minimum of twenty hours per week in a good local church. Its purpose is to expose the student to what real ministry is like, to see the “backside” of weddings, funerals, sermon preparations, session meetings, and the like.
Mentor:
Pastor Stephen M. Crotts weekly gives one-on-one time, as well as group time, with each student. Pastor Crotts is a veteran fifty year minister serving churches small, medium, and large. He has had experience in church planting, as senior pastor, and in every dimension of church life–from the mission field to publishing to the itinerancy.
It is the aim of the internship to help a student to confirm his call to ministry, affirm spiritual gifts, enjoy hands-on experience, as well as grow from group seminars on:
- Strengthening your inner life
- Small group dynamics
- Preaching preparation
- Spiritual gifts
- Worship leadership
- Theological formation
- Church History
- Evangelism
- Missions
- Singleness and marriage
- Lust, sex, and pornography
- Discipleship
- Temperaments
- Accepting a call to a local church
- Leadership styles
- Apologetics
- and free subjects of the student’s own interest
Lodging:
Every attempt is made to locate free or inexpensive housing for the student, usually in a home with a large measure of privacy. This is in the Southeastern USA region.
Finances:
The cost of the John Knox Fellows internship is $ 1,200.00 per month.
Local churches often provide for this, the Carolina Study Center offers some scholarships, and students may raise funds through the non-profit foundation. Tax deductible gifts should be made out to the Carolina Study Center.
Students are allowed to work up to twenty hours per week in part-time secular jobs to earn personal expenses and spending money. It is asked that they be careful to keep church meeting times free.
At the end of the internship, John Knox Fellows are given a sum of money, as available, to return to school and further their formal education. Pastor Crotts remains available for counseling to those having completed the internship.
